Brighton District 150th Celebrations
A few years ago I worked on designing a logo for the newly formed Big Rock Boardriders (Brighton Based). Below are the final two designs. The one on the Right was adopted.

The one on the left has a silhouetted and colour shadowed "Big Rock" landform which divides Brighton from Ocean View, you can see it in the photo below, saddle hill in the background, and then the banner below the photo is taken from the top of Big Rock with Brighton on the left with the beach, and then Ocean View far to the right.

I had the photoshop document of this rejected surf club logo, so I picked the concept up again and evolved it into a few different designs for the committee to comment on. Below, they eventually decided on number 1 as seen at the top of this post.

It has now been developed into a bumper sticker to be given out or sold over the year, and the logo used on different local clubs' activities in 2011. The Brighton Pony club is using them on certificates very soon.
Below logo used in the Taieri herald for the
Brighton Gala Day beginning this weekend.

Art Decor Commission
An art commission (above) I completed over christmas was a simple design piece to fit in with a newly painted bedroom and duvet set.
I was first sent a photo of of both the new duvet and a closeup photo of the pattern. (above).
I also had the information that the bedroom had been painted with one wall bright red, and the balance white. The artwork was to be a long and large landscape shape to be hung on the opposite wall to the red.

Surfscapes - Reviews - a success?
The exhibition was due to end today,
but has been extended until the 6th of November 2010
Exhibition Review
ODT Thursday 30th September 2010 - Arts Section
"Surfscapes" (Green Island Gallery)
Green Island Gallery's "Surfscapes" consists of work by eight local surfers who are also artists.
Several of the names are familiar, most notably Steev Peyroux and Ollie Crooks, but the work by the remaining artists is also worthy of note.
James Kerr's work is impressive, with its boldly impressionistic colours.
The sea seems to ripple in the mix of pinks and cyans which he weaves from his brush, as do the waves in two equally attractive bright works by Ollie Crooks.
More realistic are the warm vibrant tones of Nic Reeves' paintings, which depict stylised South Pacific seafronts, with foam breaking against symbol-heavy Polynesian coasts.
Darren Tautari's work is attractive, understated, and realistic.
He nicely depicts his recognisable street and beach scenes, often by picking a feature, most obviously in the simple, effective Gulls.
His work sits opposite two excellent large pieces by Steev Peyroux depicting folded blankets of hillside lapped by coastal waters or sitting nervously under sullen skies.
Street art, unsurprisingly, makes its influence known, most obviously in a series of works by Nathan Shaw, but also in the cartoon-like surfer image of Nathan Lungley.
The exhibition is completed by a series of miniature hand-float boards, shaped and decorated in fine humour by Jayin Tzu.

Phoam Surf Blog is 4 years old today!
Today celebrates FOUR years since I started the Phoam Surf Blog
Covering Surfing and Coastal issues in the deep south of New Zealand.
With 981 posts and 1765 commets, there has been thousands of hours on the beach photographing free surfing and surf competitions. Extensive travelling and thousands of hours in front of the computer photoshopping, editing film, and joyful labour at the easel painting. Not to mention the four other blogs I have launched.
Save Ocean Beach 13foot of Wood Friends of Blackhead Contributions to the Big Rock Boardriders blog. And my photo contributions to my partner's blog at Boardriding Scooter Trash
However, this blog did not start out with its current title.

There have been a number of revamps of the template over the years, such as this one below: which was celebrating 20,000 hits.

Sitemeter has now recorded over 150,000 hits
Below is a series of covers I did for the first few years, heading up each month in a mnagazine style. I would like to find the time to complete the concept.
Thank you all for your support over the years, keep stopping by, I know things have been sparse the last three months, but I'm pretty much back on board now.
If you are so compelled, please leave a comment, input, criticism, raving love etc .. I'd love to hear from you
Namaste Nic Reeves

:: Boart Art :: The Joker
Above: Caity with her Joker board art, and behind her on the street her new car ( she sold the 4WD she bought, chewed too much gas)
Caitlins scuzzy old fish, which had a revamp last year during a party at home (left) was getting a bit manky because we didn't seal the design on properly ( just used a clear enamel spray from a can).So she decided to remove the previous work.. and asked me to help her put on a spanking new design. One of her favourite symbolic images.. The Joker, from the deck of cards.
Why The Joker? She likes the Joker because of its dual use. In card play it can either be the trump card & highly regarded, or it is of no use at all and discarded from the pack. This to her represents her feelings of her own duality and usefulness of her place in life depending on outer rules and circumstances.
How we did it
We started off by scanning the playing card, and then printed it out to A4, Caitlin then drew a grid over it, and scaled the grid up by 2x to a large piece of tracing paper. I then transferred the design over to the tracing paper using the block grid method. Next Caitlin hung it against a window, and reverse traced it with charcoal. After that she laid it over her board charcoal side downwards taped it into place, and rub transferred the image on to the board. I then freehand drew with black Poscas over the charcoal. Caitlin then took the board to Carsey at Quarry Beach, who clear spray coated the design.
Below Left: a closer look at the boart art, and Right: a real cool painting that I picked up at the tip shop last week. Its an original oil, probably an old chinese production line artwork. I loved it not only because of its composition and colour, but because it was the day I decided to start Chinese acupuncture to help me get back on board with life. Weirdly too, that that night on TV, every programme or movie we watched had a tiger in it.

Custom Artwork Comp Winner
When I first launched my www.phoam.co.nz website in March 2006, I ran a competition where if you joined my mailing list, you entered the draw for a free custom surf Artwork. I can't remember the name of the woman who won, but she supplied a photo for the artwork, and the completed piece and it are above.
This marvellous mailing list has never even been used to this day.
