Proposed Management Options for Ocean Beach

Proposed Management Options for Ocean Beach

Closes: 25/11/2011

In 2008, the Council appointed a Project Team to gather data and consider management options for Ocean Beach. This followed significant erosion on the beach in June/July 2007, the DCC’s replenishment of sand on the beach and other remedial works as part of a now established ‘holding pattern’, and a comprehensive consultation process. Since then the Project Team has gathered and analysed that data and completed a risk assessment process. It has now identified proposed management options for Ocean Beach, taking into account the existing processes and risks.

A report from Tonkin & Taylor dated October 2011 entitled: ‘Ocean Beach, Coastal Issues and Options’, sets out preferred options for managing the area using an adaptive management approach. The report is available for inspection at the DCC’s Customer Services Centre and Libraries from Tuesday 25 October during their ordinary opening hours. A summary of intent and submission forms are also available. The information, plus background material on erosion at Ocean Beach, can be found at www.dunedin.govt.nz/consultation.

Submissions must be received by 5.00 pm on Friday 25 November. Hearing dates have been scheduled for Tuesday 31 January to Thursday 2 February 2012. Please state in your submission whether or not you wish to be heard.

Something Old, Forgotten but Found

I was doing a major clean out of old files on my computer, and backing everything up ready to have it reformatted, as it has been playing up shockingly the last few weeks.
I found a sequence I put together of the photo shoot I did of when Dean Morrison and Dion Agius came to Dunedin in April 2007. Music is Symphonic Pink Floyd 'Us and Them" played by the London Symphonic Orchestra.
All the images from the session are unedited straight from camera,
I never got around to fixing it up and changing the music, so never published it.
I took the photos with Chris Garden's Canon 30D, as I was looking at buying one myself, which I did the next month. Sorry Chris, I didn't mean to take so many shots, cats out of the bag now.. Other surfers featured: Scotty Todd, Jack Lewis, Kaniela

Back from Pipe

Got to Kilda about 4, and there were 4 out.. looked good, but strong winds. The sun was dancing in and out of the clouds, so some of the duller shots I converted to Sepia and black and white. I took the pulled back approach for most of the shots today as the spray from the waves was playing havoc with the focus.

After about an hour of shooting, a flood of surfers arrived and the crowd swelled to about 30 spread along 3 peaks.

I got heaps of shots, I haven't the time to put them all up here so I might make a second post in a few weeks.

Saturday the 12th (even though the dates on the pics are the 13th), duh me. Kilda had been pumping for a day, I made it out there early arvo, and took some shots from the top, before I did an afternoon meditation workshop:
Went back later in the arvo around tea time, and had a walk along the beach, the sea mist had moved in, and as the sun set some spectacular lighting... the atmosphere came to life.

Later that evening, still in town, we went to a friends for dinner, caity bought her glow sticks, we had stacks of fun while I took long exposure shots of the sticks.

One wave

Just one acceptable pic from Tuesday arvo, shooting from the top of the dunes up John Willie.
I was pretty gutted on monday night, when I screwed my knee up again out surfing with Caity. Going to be a few weeks again at least till I can climb over rocks and down dunes to get photos, and of course that also puts me out of the water for another month (apparantly) too.
Argh I hate getting old!.. and being a kook

Fun Kilda

St Kilda by the pipe was firing on Sunday afternoon. Mucked around a bit before I went down to take some shots.

It was a it crowded for a while, but heaps of waves for everyone. A few classic dropins too, loved this one:

So I was pretty much focussing on getting some shots of Hayley, Caity and Jay, but got a few finally of Shakes and some others:

Below 4 of Hayley

Below a few of Caity, not afraid to take the drop now.. and Jayin:
