Stripping down another level now

looks like Blackhead quarries are stepping it down another level, and have bugun cutting away yet another layer of the headland.
UPADTE 18th September
Below is a copy of the 1991 Covenant on Blackhead, photographed not scanned as promised, my scanner died.

Below: photos from today... the rock breaker machine is fully into it with a few more bites out of the south face

Haven't surfers already tried to stop it?

pretty much there is not much that can be done.
The best result was the 1991 covenant.
But it appears that the quarrying will continue till there is none left to quarry.
If there are enough interested to reform 'Friends of Blackhead' this can be done and avenues can be investigated.

Who's in?

Maybe start a petition? would be a shame to see that headland gone.I know i would sign it.

Nic, the DCC would control the land use and the ORC would control the emissions side of things.

I would imagine that they are operating under some pre-existing consent becasuse at a minimum if they were to seek additional cosnents for further quarrying this would you would think require a notified resurce consent. I am happy to assist and will ask a few mates at the DCC what is allowed under their existing arrangement.

Thats great Finny! I would hate to see Black Head without that headland.

if you could do that Finny, it would be a great step in the right direction.
I will scan the copy of the 1991 covenant this arvo, and add it to this post.
The new cutting is spilling rock towards the sea, and covering the area which is protected by the covenant too.

Does anyone test the water quality at Blackhead? Always wondered about those setting ponds that you always see flowing into the sea!!!

Anonymous said...

Yea it gets really bad after a heavy rain. What are those swamps/"setting ponds"?

nic on 21 September, 2009 17:07 said...

Blackhead has 0.7 hectares of settling ponds for water treatment.
Can't see any water quality testing results for blackhead.
Although it says do not swim or collect shellfish, that was when the sewarage was pumped out raw from the beach 1km down the beach.. there is now a 800metre outfall pipe with secondary treatment waste exiting out to sea.
Many decades ago they used to burn the insulation off copper wiring at blackhead, which would run into the streams out to sea.

Sounds like Peter Chin is turning a blind eye to Dunedins coastal environment

I have made the DCC, ORC and DoC aware of what is happening. DoC entered into the conservation covenant so I guess they are partially responsible for ensuring compliance. ORC are responsible for the monitoring of environmental effects such as discharges to air, water, land etc and their monitoring/compliance team is contactable on 474 0827. The DCC well they have the least role in this as under the zone (Rural) the quarry is a scheduled permitted activity.

Most of the conditions attached relate to noise, hours of operation and blasting however this one is interesting and I suspect it in some part respects the covenant:

‘At Blackhead Quarry, extraction of material shall not occur on Sec 153 Green Island Bush SD and shall not occur within 100 meters of Blackhead Road on Secs 154 and 155 Green Island Bush SD. However, these areas may be used for quarry activities not involving extraction such as stock piling overburden.’

I suggest we hammer ORC and DoC to ensure compliance.

Starting to look pretty bare. Great that people are pushing to stop further damage to Blackhead.

I like this place! I love the idea and wish there was a place like this in Astoria, Queens. I am a surfer and found a "real surfer bar" in Point Break NYC. I am kinda jealous ;0PIts filled with surfers, people who like surfers, people who like the beach and people who don't want to live close to town. I really like this place. You know what they have these real Proctor and Channel One surfboards on the wall. It's nice for coming any day of the week and eating a late brunch. The food was outstanding. The brunch and sides were prefect and tasty. It is a perfect "escape" from city living. It is probably one of the only places where you can get a nice frozen pina colada or margarita. The service was on hit. They came up and checked on us so many times and made sure everything was up to par. It gets very active and the bartenders keep everybody having a good time. The bartender was very accommodating. He was nice enough to make a drink, that wasn't on the menu, for me :0) Did I mention the bartenders are nice eye candy. It was amazing to see their “das boot” which is shaped like a boot filled with beer. Don’t get me wrong, I am not drunk…it’s an actual boot shaped beer container ready to be emptied. Try it ..You will love it!! Oh. How can I forget, they even have a wheel o' shots where you just have to spin it and have to drink whatever shot it lands on!! Now call that bar creativity at its best!!! And when I spill a tray full of shots on myself, the bartender so kindly remakes them for me? Good music, too, and the decor helped us weather an otherwise overcast and rainy day. You know that old song "Brandy"? It goes, "Brandy, you're a fine girl, what a good wife you would be. But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea." I believe Brandy works here. No reason, I just do. And that song happens to be a guilty pleasure of mine, so that's a plus in my book. You can simply waltz over to this colorful and warm establishment, enjoy some drinks with friends, and walk home. The bar is right at the center, so you can walk to either side for drinks, and the bartenders are friendly and at your service. There is a variety of seating, good music, and friendly neighborhood people to make your time more enjoyable. Not pretentious, very cozy, I think Point Break is a fabulous place to spend some time with friends.
