Caitlin recovering

Yesterday I got a call at 11am from Caitlins school to say she has collapsed and the ambulance was on its way.. man what a totally freaky call to receive, I had no other info, so the next 5 mins the thoughts racing through my mind as to what had happened were ferocious, if you have kids and know what its like if it appears their life is threatened by anything its definitely scarey.
She left for school in the morning just fine. On the way to school walking with her best friend they had a 'spray lollie' from the local shop, a liquid in two flavours from China which was given to them by another friend. After 20 mins they both developed sore tummies and after and hour they were both feeling very sick with intense tummy pains, and thats when Caity collapsed. She was admitted after 6 hours in A&E after being put on a drip, morphine and observation. she was feeling better today, so they let her home, but the hospital are not willing to attribute the episode to the spray lolly, even though their other tests were inconclusive as to what it was.

If I can say anything about whats happened, it's educate your kids about the 'dangers' of all these new ranges of taste experience lollies out. what ever happened to them being satisfied with spearmint leaves, caramel chews, milk bottle lollies etc, thats all I had as a choice as a kid. Also that the local shop even stocks these new lollies with so many preservatives and dangerous ingrediants (like citric acid, asparatame) .. my thoughts are that the shop owners should at least have some kind of community responsibility to offer safe choices for their customers, rather than a few more dollars in the till at the end of the day.

Hey Nic, I'm sorry to hear about Caitlin. I'm glad she's feeling better and I hope she's over whatever it was. I know what a scare kids can give you.

Glad she's OK! (and hope you are too, what an awful call to get). What did the store owner say? Did they remove the stuff from thier shelves? Here in the US where there's a "culture of lawsuits" the shopkeeper surely would have.

The shop was informed by a friend who went there and told them that two girls ended up i hospital after taking one of thier lollies, apparantly they were very blase about it, and didn't do a thing I will go up again tomorrow, problem is the hospital wont recognie it was the lollies they just said it was a 'conincidence' so have no leverage to get the stuff off the shelves.

Yeh - basically the more levels of processing from natural products the more dangerous, look out for anything with aspartame, phenylalanine, benz-anything and long lists of numbers. It makes me mad how kids are persuaded to eat poisons from such an early age... the flow on effect to adult health must be enormous! Can't wait to see Caitin back on the waves soon!

yes totally agree, especially with asparatame!! my other daughter got mild asparatame poisoning from when I fed her up on sugar free VitC tablets when she had glandular fever a few years back, she also got very sensitive to MSG as she was addicted to maggi curry noodles.

Poor you! But iv'e got to ask you all are you sure it's not asparatine you are talking about? As that is a sweetner used in many sugar free products. Also I just grabbed a pack of maggi curry noodles and no where does it say that there is msg added. I even tried to call the hotline phone but being sat there's no one there but as I work in the science industry I am going into work later to investigate further. My son read your blogs and said he had heard about these lollies so Nic name and shame the shop involved and I will go buy one and do a breakdown of it in the lab for all those parents out there.

would you like to have the original canister that they 'sprayed' from? and I have a new pack of it still sealed, also the hospital discharge report mentioning it. Yes its (spelling?) aspartame, the artificial sweetener, I have done alot or research on it a few years back, and its nasty stuff check out http://www.sweetpoison.com but I don't think its too much the issue with Caitlin. MSG is the flavour enhancer code 621 on food.

I think you should take it into the dept Health offices where you report food poisioning complaints, they are in hanover street I think and they can test it through the poision centre. Knowing where you live was it the Kew Store Dairy that sold them? The issue is that kids probably had a reaction to them so we as parents have a duty to do something about it and the idiots importing and selling such shit.

That's only the tip of the iceberg and when you start to look at these issues just that little bit deeper it gets more and more twisted... the FDA who approves (and endorses) new food products on the market actually make their killing (pardon the pun) out of pharmaceiuticals for (in particular) diabetes, hardened arteries and drugs to quell other obesity/metabolism related conditions. As charmingly corrupt as adventures of the happy Bush-Bin Laden family !!!

yes, I discovered that when I was doing my research a few years back, the drug industry is a multi billion dollar corporation.. and keeping people sick unnecessarily is a necessity to keep the $$ turning over. so called 'independant' research groups are funded by the very corporations that are killing via allowing poisons in our food. So none of it is independant or unbiased at all. take the gulf war syndrome!! believed to be caused by consumption of heat affected diet pepsi(or was it coke)where the asparatame converted to a poison and affected nerve synapses causing distressing symptoms = gulf war syndrome. too late at night to remember facts.. and I am tearing my hair out trying to get computers to work for me to get some work done.. I hate harvey Norman! and ACER!!
