Wall Street Mall

For the EX Pat Dunedinites, the Newly opened Wall Street Mall on George Street. I took the time to get some shots of it in town last week.

Pics taken during lunch hour , mall was pretty empty, not much through traffic, shop staff looked pretty bored.
As for the design, I loved the glass ceiling, lots of natural light, but the changing coloured lights behind the curving panel at the entrance was a bit overboard. The sunken lunch area was quite exposed, I wouldn't want to sit and chomp my biscuits there. I think the fake glass panels on the outside of the building cheapen the project a little, with fuzzy etched arched windows in the glass trying to blend in with the old street scape.

ceases to amaze me that with all the hype surrounding its opening etc, that less that 1/4 of the shops are tenanated or open for business. just what was all the hype about??

I think the hype is to stimulate spending in this city.

Nic, they will need to lower the prices further to stimulate me. wall st does have a positive in that it will link to the golden centre giving it a new life and also connect thru to the meridian.
pity the vacant shops down princes st. the council should provide some initiatives to revive that part of the town. the council should spend monies on other projects including the old post office as opposed to committing to the god awful stadium.

The old post office is up for mortagee sale at the moment. More than three tenders have been received including "several" tenders from interested property developers.

Fisher & Paykel have confirmed a ten year lease for wall street for its design engineers and call centre staff by June (130-160 office workers). Good for the coffee and lunch shops.

There are rumours rumours that tenants have received strong incentives such as no rent for a year to lease at at Wall Street.

Ironic timing to name the place "Wall St."

The name comes from the large internal stone wall, which provides heating for the mall and offices - part of the 5 star green rating for the complex ...

nah, the name was penned by a former council staff member, as a direct play on NY Wall Street name. Having the stone wall helped, which saved some red faces in the current circumstances.Read some nonsense about it being named after a former street that ran through the area. But there was no street, just a butcher's yard. The naming was exactly as it seems.

if they are naming it after the wall which assists with the green star rating, why didn't they instead name it 'thermal mass' street?

Excellent point. I love the comical press releases that suggest the concrete structural support wall is providing all the heating for the mall and offices. If only the thermal collection and distribution properties were that clever. Fortunately there's about a million dollars worth of brand new mechanical heating plant in the complex to take up the 95% slack.

personally i am aware that 5 start ratings cannot be applied to shopping centres.
