August 2007 - the month that was

destruction and creation

The bricks are coming off .. the hotel is going up .. and the character of the esplanade is guaranteed to change drastically .. the implications of such a massive [in scale of the area] development will reveal over the coming years. The building permit is obviously secured. see previous blog post on this issue
Change again around the corner in the public playground adjacent to the Southcoast Boardriders clubrooms. I used to play there when I was a child, and I took my children to play there too, always the same old classic playground equipment and probably the last remaining of its genre in Dunedin. Below a series of photos of the reconstruction over the last 6 weeks. (inset, some kind of surfing mechanical bull thing)

I guess if the children can't play on the beach due to an absence of sand, they now have a high tech playground.

First post in my new house. Been an incredibly hectic three days, am dog tired, and relieved the bulk of the big work is done. One big job left, and that's finding a new computer desk ( old one fell apart during the shift) and sorting out the studio, didn't realise I had so many unpainted canvasses. below, before it all began, between washes of cloud.

above, first stage.. earths shadow begins to creep across
below, completely covered, the moon turns dark blood red.

above, as the shadow begins to move off
below, eerie glow

above, partially eclipsed, the other side.

As the rest of the household was sleeping I escaped and caught some quiet time at St Kilda.. in preparation for the last day of packing for the big shift Sunday.. some sweet light and fog did the job to charge my batteries.

Below, mid morning.. still avoiding going home.. the inside at St Clair took the building swell with Style.

All below: rising to 4-6 foot by 3pm.. the banks out the back fired off some long peelers and the odd barrell.

From Tash and Regan .. who are missed heaps by many of us in Dunedin. Sent me through an email with these photos from the Balearic Islands. Where after many months of being surf starved and working hard have found a reef break that they have named 'el reefo'...

sunshine disappeared

Then the two shots below taken after I whipped into town at 4pm today to pick up the big camera.. the drive from town to St Clair in stunning golden sunshine disappeared after my first shot (left) a classic St Clair drop in ;0) one on right of Geordi .. in the hazy dull light.

Below an animated sequence .. no words needed.

.. a mixed bag today.. some shots from my matchbox digi camera the Pentax from yesterday (as big camera was still away being maintained) of the super low tide with new moon.. back to the rock bottom for St Clair (excuse the pun).

Then a lesson: please take a fence. Half submerged in sand at the base of the stairs.. Jay pulled it out today and put it in a safer place. Below this arvo on the pentax..
.. some more shots of the constantly moving sandcastles below.

And apparently the Edgar Centre is having a huge beach volleyball arena soon, truckloads of sand are going to be shipped in.. not much spare sand around anywhere these days, love to find out where they are getting it from.
