John Wilson Drive Decision

From the Otago Daily Times By Chris Morris on Wed, 2 Sep 2009

The plan
> Gate blocking vehicles from John Wilson Ocean Dr to be retained, unlocked on weekdays one hour after sunrise and locked one hour before sunset.

> Gates to remain locked at weekends, from Friday night until Monday morning.

> Fence at Lawyers Head to proceed to resource consent stage, but not built for up to three months.

> Monitoring of the road's use by walkers on weekends and of Lawyers Head, could see the fence plan abandoned.

> Plan to start once parking issues considered by council staff.

There is a POLL about this decision running on the ODT website here.. flick over and vote

With the expected limitation of parking at St Clair, the re-opening of John Wilson Drive for parking for surfers would be welcomed. But as the new decision stands, it won't be open in the weekend. AND the gates will close an hour BEFORE sunset, which means a cut-short-surf to get back to your car so you are not locked in.
There is also the issue of the overflowing rubbish bins along the drive.

as a overlooking resident, previously i have called the police on many occasions regarding the bogan activity of boy racers along JWD. i have witnessed cars on the golf course (believe me), cars being burnt out and on fire (stolen more than likley) and noise at all hours of the night and morning. i have also witnessed on a number of occasions the chopper search and body recovery. it is pretty clear that this road closure has resulted in a reduction in number of suicides. the talk of a fence or similar structure could be substituted by planting the headland in gorse or another pricky plant as this will assist in deterring potential jumpers. doesn't prevent them from going up to highgrove above seconds or over to tunnel beach/b'head. i would welcome the closure on weekends to restrict these vermin boy racers whose only intent is to congregate and to litter, however as a surfer this too will penalise me and other genuine coastal users. no easy solution but get involved through the submission stage.

you are right shaun, tis only a short walk along beach at kilda. as for your escalator, no hope buddy as the DCC and their consultant engineers can't even get the disabled ramp at st clair sorted yet. how many years has that been on-going?

Isn't time that the car stopped ruling our city. If people want to set in your car and look at the sea there are plenty of other place they can do this but not many place for us car less people.
